NOW.... lets say I was going to going to heaven...and....I was going to pick a pair of shoes that I thought Jesus might really like; what pair should I pick? I walked over to the brand new shoes - raise your hand if you think Jesus would like to see me in these shoes...several raised their hands....and a couple talked about why He would like the brand new shoes. Then I walked over to the old shoes, not worn out or dirty, just old - I picked them up - if you think Jesus would like to see me in these shoes - tap your head. Now I go for the dirty, smelly shoes - I picked them up as several of them scrunched up their nose and whispered ...oh no...yuk! If you think Jesus would like to see me in these shoes touch your nose. Or...If you think Jesus would not care what kind of shoes I wore I would like for you to stand up.
I read James 2:1-4 to them:
"My brothers, do not show favoritism as you hold on to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. For example, a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and a poor man dressed in dirty clothes also comes in. If you look with favor on the man wearing the fine clothes and say, “Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor man, “Stand over there,” or, “Sit here on the floor by my footstool,” haven’t you discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?"
"After reading these verses what do you think Jesus would think of my shoes?" I asked. After a chatter of opinions, and some clarification from me, it was clear that Jesus would not care what kind of shoes I wore.
School is a prison of sorts for those children that don't have the nice shoes or clothes. Help your child to understand the importance of NOT JUDGING others based on how they look. Teach them, by your actions and God's Word to accept others even though they appear to be different from us.
Here is a prayer that you can share with your child:
Thank you for loving us just for who we are. Help us not to judge others based on their appearances. Teach us to love like you love and to look at others as you look at others. Teach us to be kind and accepting to all different kinds of people. We want to obey your Word. In Jesus Name. AMEN
