But the rewards when we MAKE the time!
This picture is just one of those times....
Since we have 6 beautiful grandchildren - ages 4 to 13 (almost 14!) we have a variety of toys. Tom went to the coffee can (plastic you know) and dumped out a variety of plastic army men and construction men. He then searched out a small ball - a golf ball would do...as he explained to Madison that he used to use the little ball from a paddle ball game... paddle ball?
Anyway...a golf ball will do. They sat across from each other in the den and sat up their "troop" - they used the golf ball to see if they could knock down the others men. The game continued for quite awhile with fun listening to the "hollers" and "whoops" and "oh man...just about".
Caroline, who is 6, returned with her mom and decided she wanted to try this out...oh what fun an old golf ball and some plastic men from the dollar store can bring!
Madison then asked about the game of chess. We have a chess set on a table that is set up all the time. He had walked by it many times and now was wondering, "do you know how to play chess, papaw?"
The bells were ringing! DING DING DING - papaw felt like he had really hit the jackpot! He had been inspired to "take the time". It turned into a day of fun and learning and spending one on one time. The chess lesson turned into a time of fun and learning all about pawns and kings and all the other little "characters" in chess and a longing for Madison to understand more and the excitement of next time!
After the chess lesson Madison came back into the den and found the game "Battleship" - he and papaw took on grandma and Caroline...we persevered and won that match!
Next time several family members are sitting with their electronics make that call, put the electronics away, do not bring them into the game area and TAKE THE TIME!
