I am feeling like a frog in a pond full of new lily pads!**************************************************************************** MY WRITING PROCESS
When I received the magazine in the mail that my first written article was in...well I could hardly "contain" myself (it was about gardening)! That was the beginning of several articles and that glorious feeling of people reading what you have written!
Currently I have one book that I published - which is what this website is all about, "Dalton Discovers the Ten Commandments". When asked to read to a group of children I jump at the chance! There is not a better group of "critics" than when with a group of children!
I have another manuscript started - almost to the point of needing an illustrator again... Carmen Discovers Faith through Moses.
I am also enjoying a year with our local newspaper - The Courier Tribune - as a Guest Columnist - this is the 3rd time I have tackled this project - a year commitment with 4 columns in that year.
I have also started a Devotions book - the title - "BEING" - from the Merriam Webster Dictionary - Being - the most important or basic part of a person's mind or self.
Another project is blooming..."Sermon Notes"...I jot down notes during sermons/speeches/retreats...you speak - I'm writing! As I have read through these notes at different times I realized that depending on your situation and the issue at hand different meanings come to light. Not sure where it will lead but I am looking forward to the reveal!
And now....a blogger. This fairly new journey is an exciting one - I had some individual "training" by my daughter, Kelly, who so graciously gave of her time to explain the blogging process and what you want to accomplish! Wow - ok - that is exactly what I have been looking for!
My writing has a "style all it's own" well I guess most writers do! My husband always tells me... don't change HOW you write... your "style" is yours and it has a unique way of drawing children and adults in. I believe my life experiences have been the most unique education!
As a Director of an After School Care program in a church years ago, I was amazed at the children's understanding of so many Christian values, but disappointed in some of the things we have not taught them to understand in a way that helps them grow in their faith. That is where this series of books evolved from.
I have written for many years but more on a professional level of Methods and Procedures for companies I worked for, so when I found this love for writing could be used in a positive way for children I have put my life into sharing it.
An engaging book that guides your child through the Ten Commandments. Homer the angel comes into their lives and a special friendship is born!
My goal is for children and adults to experience the situations in each of these books that will lead them to understand it, use it and intertwine it into their daily lives. Children and adults need gentle reminders at times and as this book is read it will nudge you... did you realize that when you go to the movies and if your child is 10 they get in for less? Well your child is 11... how many would just tell them he is 10... what have they gained? $2.00? and... They have taught your child that lying and stealing is ok.
Dalton and Carmen are 2 of our 6 grandchildren... Dalton is the star in Dalton Discovers the Ten Commandments and Carmen is starring in Carmen Discovers Faith through Moses. Each grandchild will have a book that they will "star" in! They are all so excited to see their name in print!
My motivation is very clear - bringing God's Word to life! How do we find a way to help children understand HOW to desire to live for God and not for the world? Bringing to light everyday issues that we all find ourselves trying to justify can be issues that we face with our children every day.
When the first article I wrote was published in the magazine I was so excited when I received it in the mail...and a check, I didn't really expect money! So, as with many writers, money is not the torch that guides me to write.
The words are in my head and my heart and when I get them where people can read them I have completed an important part of my journey.
A pencil/pen and notebook are usually always at hand. Sometimes it is a sharpie and a piece of paper towel... jotting down things that stay categorized in my head playing over and over until I can release them with that writing tool.
I do enjoy taking time in the morning to sit and write but many times it is when I "find" 15 minutes - then I pull out all my notes and try to organize them.
Ideas can come during the night and up I jump to jot them down... but putting them altogether comes during daylight hours only.
A blogger... yes a fairly new role for me, but I am enjoying the thoughts of so many reading what I love to do! I have pages upon pages in notebooks upon notebooks and journals upon journals of words upon words...they are like a packet of seeds waiting to become a flower garden; they are planted, cultivated, fertilized - the blooming starts and the flowers wait to be picked and enjoyed.
The walls in our office are painted "butter" yellow and I have pictures of our children and grandchildren crowding the walls along with some fun things... like a caricature of my husband and I while in Vail, Colorado... funny how people "see" you... there are wall hangings that people close to my heart have made and given to us that bring me joy and peace. And the view out the window... well it is awesome. As I sit down I take it all in - breath it in - spending time in prayer is an integral part of anything I do...then sit for a few minutes with my fingers touching; barely touching the keys on the laptop. The words come, changes come, stillness comes. Walking away- spending a few minutes outside - looking for "Woody" - our resident Pileated Woodpecker - checking out the new blooming flowers and garden goodies and getting that precious hot cup of tea or refreshing glass of water - with a little lemon, of course - brings new visions.
My husband is a great listener and has many times sat as I read what I have written... over and over and over and over...
I print out what I have written and read it several times during the day and then go back and finish. During the day I also share some of my thoughts, ideas and other little tidbits on social media. It is amazing the support and interest out there in that world of people that we would not have a chance of meeting except for the World Wide Web!
Each of my books, articles and newspaper columns are dedicated to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. .
I am who I am...because of who He is.
